FBI FD-258 CARD GUIDE
Understanding the FBI FD-258 Fingerprint Card
01
Use the Required Card
Use an FD-258 only when the requesting organization requires it. Bring its instructions with you: you confirm your personal details and sign when directed, the requester supplies agency routing information, and the technician captures the required ink impressions.
02
Bring Your Instructions
Bring the complete instructions or packet from your employer, agency, licensing board, consulate, or program. Be ready to verify your personal information and sign the card when directed.
03
Agency Details
Your requesting organization supplies the agency routing information, ORI, reason for fingerprinting, card count, and submission route. We do not guess or create those details.
04
Technician Portion
Grey Hound Legal captures the required ink-and-roll impressions and completes the technician portion when the card calls for it. The receiving organization decides acceptance and processing.
Preparing for Clear Ink Prints
Wash hands with soap and water when possible. Arrive with hands clean, dry, and free of excess lotion residue. Let the technician know if your hands are dry, flaky, worn, or work-affected, and bring the requester’s instructions or card.
What to Expect During Ink Fingerprinting
Grey Hound Legal’s appointment process begins with careful preparation and even fingerprint-specific ink. Each finger is rolled nail-to-nail, then plain impressions help confirm the sequence. The goal is clean, complete, correctly sequenced cards without avoidable smudges.
COMMON USES
Common Reasons People Need Ink Fingerprints
01
Employment & Licensing
Employment, licensing, and professional-registration programs often request fingerprint cards. Bring the instructions, forms, and card type from the organization handling your application.
02
Permits & Security
Permits, security roles, and volunteer programs can have their own card, submission, and timing rules. Your requester decides what it accepts and where it must go.
03
International & Travel
For travel, international, or immigration-related requests, bring the instructions from the employer, consulate, or receiving authority. They decide the form, card count, stamp or signature, deadline, and acceptance.
04
Your Requester Decides
Ink fingerprinting does not decide a background-check result. Grey Hound Legal captures your prints; the receiving program controls submission, processing, and outcome.

Follow the receiving organization’s submission instructions for card handling and delivery.
Verify unexpected requests through the organization’s official contact channels.
Fingerprinting With a Missing, Injured, or Difficult-to-Print Finger
Every set of hands is different. Missing, injured, scarred, stiff, or worn fingers can require a careful approach. We capture the impressions that are possible and follow the requesting organization’s instructions; that organization decides what it will accept. If you have a special circumstance or unusual paperwork, contact us before your visit.
Ink Fingerprinting Questions, Answered
Do I need an appointment for ink fingerprinting? No. Walk-ins are welcome for ink-and-roll fingerprinting, and no appointment is necessary.
How much does ink fingerprinting cost? In-office ink fingerprinting is $85. Mobile ink fingerprinting is $150.
What should I bring to my fingerprinting visit? Bring a government-issued photo ID and the instructions, form, or fingerprint card from the organization requesting your prints. Grey Hound Legal provides fingerprint cards and basic supplies at no additional charge.
Do you offer Live Scan fingerprinting? No. Grey Hound Legal provides ink-and-roll fingerprinting only. The organization requesting your prints decides whether it accepts an ink card or requires Live Scan elsewhere.
What if an ink impression needs to be retaken? If an impression needs to be retaken for print quality during your visit, Grey Hound Legal provides an in-visit quality retry at no charge.
Can you scan or email my completed fingerprint card? Grey Hound Legal can scan and email a completed ink fingerprint card at no charge when the receiving organization accepts electronic delivery. Check that organization's instructions before relying on email delivery.
How long does an appointment take? It varies with paperwork and print quality; allow enough time for careful rolled and plain impressions.
Can you fingerprint children? A child may be fingerprinted when the requesting organization permits it. Contact us first with the paperwork.
Are prints automatically stored in an FBI or national database? No. Capture at a visit is distinct from agency submission, search, and retention, which depend on the receiving program and its legal authority. An old police or jail card is usually not reusable for employment or licensing; the receiving organization decides whether it needs a current card and its own routing and submission.
Can I make my own card or use a copy? Use the exact form or card your requester requires. Do not use a homemade or photocopied substitute unless the requester expressly allows it. For travel, immigration, permits, employment, licensing, or background checks, Grey Hound captures ink-and-roll prints and provides cards; each requester or agency decides form, routing, submission, retention, and outcome. Grey Hound does not conduct or decide the background check.
